John got back to his feet and in unsettling, invasive move put his hands on Hannah’s shoulders. “You see, children. Sadie’s dark power is so strong that even your eldest Survivors have succumbed. We know the ways in which Satan works. Sadie is doing his work.”

“He’s lying!” I cried.“You and I both know that you have brought nothing but tragedy and desecration to this family. If we are in peril, it is because of you,” he said. Then turning to the crowd, he screamed, “It is because of Sadie!”Half the crowd hailed his words, but the other half looked unconvinced, and he could tell. Suddenly, he put his hands to his head and dropped to his knees in the dirt.“Wait! Family! I am hearing something from the Lord! He says that Satan has possessed our daughter Sadie, and there is no hope for her. He says that if you don’t believe, then we must search her body, for it is covered in the Devil’s Marks.”It was straight out of the Salem history books.“You’ve got to be joking,” I huffed. But no one thought he was joking. The thoughts of every living Survivor swelled in my mind and consumed me, their doubt and fear and outrage spinning around my brain, choking down my throat.“You can’t listen to him! Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan Review

Review:  I adored Team Human! I even emailed the authors to gush, and probably made a fool of myself. 

Just so you know Team Human is not a vampire book I mean there a vampires but it is not a vampire book. People who love vampire books will enjoy it, and people who hate vampire books will enjoy it as well.

Mel, Mel, Mel I loved Mel as a main character. She was feisty, determined, and fiercely loyal. She would do almost anything for her friends. Speaking of her friends, Anna Cathy and Ty have great personalities. They are all separate people who aren't just following the main character around like sheep. Which is something I see way too often in books these days. Cathy is so firm in her beliefs and won't let  the opinions of her friends dictate her life. Anna is so amazing! She is so much stronger than I would be in her place. Each of these girls are people I would want to be friends with.

Team Human is a book about friendship. If you are looking for that ever-elusive non-romantic relationship focused book this is the book for you. While there is some romantic tension it is not the backbone of this book.

The plot of Team Human is awesome! It is part mystery part story of friendship. And you know how I feel about a good mystery. I loved trying to figure out what was going on along with Mel.

Team Human made me laugh, tear up, and fall in love. It is a must read!

The Childe by C.A. Kunz review + giveaway!

To make matters worse, her family is oddly dead set against Ryan, the boy she grows to like. But everyone has their secrets: is Ryan really what he seems to be, and what is Cat’s family not telling her?

The Childe is the first book in this coming-of-age fantasy series which follows Cat's life through the twists and turns toward finding out whom and what she really is. Come and take the plunge with Cat into a world filled with mystery, biting humor, and the paranormal. 

Review:  I don't typically review self published books but I do make exceptions if it is from an author I have worked with before or through a publicist I have worked with before. Because of this I was really excited to find that The Childe is an example of a well done self published book.

I enjoyed getting to know Cat. She is a regular 15 year old with a penchant for horror novels, and I felt that she was very realistic and besides the whole Childe thing I felt like I could have gone down to the local high school and met someone similar to her.

I also really liked Cat's group of friends they were all so different and really added a nice dynamic to the story. I also liked the fact that Cat's parents were involved, I mean they had some idea what was going on ( more than Cat) but I liked how they worried and acted how any other parents were, not all AWOL like other YA parents.

As for the plot it was very interesting, I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen next. My criticism would be the fact that I would get a little snippet of info that would just make me even more confused and lost. I wish in that respect the introduction to information had been a little bit smoother because I found myself lost for some of the book. Thankfully some of my questions were answered by the end and I could see what the author was trying to accomplish. But other than that I was very happy with this book.

This is a good paranormal read that is new, fresh and interesting!

Guest Post C.A. Kunz authors of The Childe

Today I have with me the authors of The Childe and Dark Days  

Carol Kunz was born in New Ferry, England. Her interest in the supernatural was first sparked upon reading Bram Stoker's Dracula at the age of eleven. As a teenager, her fascination with the mythology behind vampires, werewolves and witches continued. Being an avid reader, Carol finds it easy to spend several hours wrapped up in a great fantasy novel.

Adam Kunz was born in Newport News, Virginia. Growing up, he was a huge fan of creature features and books about things that go bump in the night. When he's not busy writing, Adam enjoys his job at a certain theme park in Orlando, Florida as a décor consultant. This job brings him face to face with all sorts of nightmarish creatures, especially when he decorates the haunted houses for the park's annual Halloween event.

Carol and Adam currently reside forty-five minutes away from each other in the sunny state of Florida.

Music’s Role In Our Writing Process and Beyond

Music is such an important part of my (Adam) writing process. My mom, Carol, usually has to write in silence, but she does sometimes have the TV on in the background though. It may sound weird, but I can’t seem to write without listening to music. I’m convinced that it allows me to clear my head of all the other story ideas that are floating around up there, and just focus on my current project.

If I want to get to a certain emotion while writing, I like to listen to a certain song. If I’m writing a romantic scene, I may put on a song like “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, or “Back To December” by Taylor Swift. If I’m writing a heart-pumping action scene, I may put on a song like “Promises” by Nero, or “Burn It Down” by Linkin Park. I find that music just immerses me right into a scene, and I can really get into it if I’m driven by a good song. I’ve actually come up with several scene ideas simply by just listening to a song.

In terms of The Childe series, music has played a huge part in its creation. Not only did I listen to music the entire time while writing it, but we also created a soundtrack that perfectly complements the first two books in the series. Lee Marvin, a truly awesome and talented individual, created and produced The Childe Soundtrack. Lee read our first novel, The Childe, and immediately wanted to write a song inspired by it. That one song, “Amber,” led to me working very closely with Lee to create the entire 14 song soundtrack, and we couldn’t be happier with the final product.  

With our new series The Modified, which is a dystopian fantasy, I’ve been listening to a lot of Dubstep music from Nero, Skrillex, Flux Pavillion and Deadmau5 while writing. These artists have a futuristic feel to their sound that immediately puts me into the world of The Modified, and I think listening to this kind of music really enhances the scenes I write. We’re also working with Lee Marvin on a soundtrack for The Modified series, and it will incorporate Dubstep music mixed with the soft styling of artists like Taylor Swift and Christina Perri. So far the songs have such a unique feel to them, and we’re really looking forward to sharing this soundtrack with everyone.

So, as you can see music plays a large role in my creative process, and I seriously wouldn’t have it any other way. My love for music is only rivaled by my love to read and write, and the fact that I can to say I get to do all three of these things in one project, seems like a dream come true.

Review:

As I was reading this book the thought that kept coming to my mind was “Amanda Havard is brilliant” because she totally is. She had created a world in the Survivors series that is our own but re-imagined into something so different and vibrant it could totally take place in another world.

I enjoyed Point of Origin even more than The Survivors. I guess because I was already invested in the story and was dying to know what would happen next. I also grew to like certain characters even more in this book, for example, I didn’t really care for Mark in the first book but I adored him in Point of Origin. He really blossomed as a character for me and I liked getting to know him better. I also liked that Cole was in this one even more. I am 100% team Cole.

The mythology of The Survivors Series is so complex and beautifully written. I could legitimately spend hours reading about the mythology and how it all ties together.

Sadie really come into her own in Point of Origin, yeah she is plagued with doubts but we also get to see her grow, not only as a basic character, but as a Survivor.

This series is a must read for lovers of Paranormal and even Fantasy. I could not put it down and cannot wait for the next book!

Review:

I am one of the people who is tired of paranormal books. They are getting old and many have the same elements of the other ones I’ve read. But I am always willing to try another one in the hope that I will find something AMAZING. Well I did. The Survivors is so good. It reminded me why I enjoyed reading paranormal to begin with.

I’m no going to lie. The beginning of the book was on the slow side. But one I was introduced to some other players besides just Sadie I was drawn in and could not wait to find out what would happen next.

Sadie was an interesting narrator. She was smart and I liked finding out what her talents were, through her using them instead of just being told. It’s like they always say show not tell. And Amanda Havard did a great job of that!

Ginny was also one of my favorite characters, she was spunky and I think she was a perfect complement to Sadie. I also adored Cole and I wish he was in it more.

The Survivors themselves were very interesting and I enjoyed finding out more about them, even though we weren’t given much. Hopefully we will get to understand them better, and their background more in the next book.

This book was breathtaking. I could not put it down and was sad when I had to go out because I wanted to know what would happen next. I definitely recommend you pick it up!

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

Review:

I am one of the many people who fell in love with Julie Kagawa’s storytelling and writing in her Iron Fey series. This newest book is completely different from that world and takes a new and inventive look at vampires.

I know what you're thinking. Vampires? Really? Trust me I know how you feel. But Julie Kagawa makes them new again in The Immortal Rules, and its not just a world with vampires, there are humans and rabids as well. I personally found the rabids creation story to be fascinating.

The vampires are the ruling class in this post-apocalyptic world.  Which was a twist that I found interesting, and it affirmed the fact that vampires are DANGEROUS and not to be messed with. I also really liked how Allie struggled to keep hold of her humanity, it made her easier to relate with and made you feel for her even though she is a vampire.

Also Allie is a bad-ass before she gets bitten, which I appreciated because I am not a fan of weak female characters. There is also a little romance, but it is not a big thing that consumes the whole story which I really liked.

I liked so many things about The Immortal Rules but my absolute favorite was learning the mythology behind Julie Kagawa’s vampires. The way they were created and how their bodies work made so much sense to me, and I loved learning about it.

Even though The Immortal Rules is a pretty size-able book I was able to finish rather quickly and I never got bored. I totally recommend it for fans of vampires and those who are a little tired of them as well. And if you fell in love with Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series I think you will like this as well! I cannot wait for the next one!

Vesper by Jeff Sampson

Review:

Vesper starts with a girl giving a testimony to some “government” official and I don’t know about you, but that always intrigues me!

Vesper was so not what I expected. It was more complex and gritty, with twists that I certainly didn’t see coming. I enjoyed unraveling the mystery with Emily and wondering what would happen next. I really love mysteries so this was a fun take on a mystery.

Jeff Sampson created a situation that was different from the typical paranormal genre, and might I say that I really enjoyed how Emily wasn’t a lame, typical paranormal protagonist. She took things into her own hands and (at least at night) wasn’t afraid to investigate. I also really liked that there was no real “romance” I mean there was toward the end but it was different and interesting.

The end of Vesper left me yearning for the next book, yet satisfying what I wanted to know at the beginning of the book. That is one of my biggest pet peeves, when an author doesn't answer a fundamental question by the end of the book, Jeff Sampson didn’t do that to me which I really appreciated.

I definitely recommend this book to fans of Paranormal books and even people who are a little wary or tired of paranormal. I think they would both enjoy it!

Shattered Souls Review

Review:

I really liked this book! I haven’t read too many books about ghosts but I think this is my favorite of the ones I have read so far.

 

One thing that I really liked about this book was that Lenzi was a strong heroine, she didn’t just sit back and complain or wait for other to help her like many other paranormal books. If you love paranormal you will really love this book, but even if you are kind of tired of it, this book is so original and different that I think you would still like it.

 

The chemistry between Alden and Lenzi was awesome and it just wasn’t insta-love, like many other paranormal books.

 

This book while being action-packed wasn’t so overwhelming that I got tired of the action, it was also about Alden and Lenzi growing together and Lenzi growing in her abilities.

 

I would recommend this book to fans of Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton, not because they are the same by any means but because they have the similar Protector/Savior thing going on with the main characters.

Review:

This book was really different, I mean it’s paranormal but its also about dealing with consequences of your actions. It’s also about dealing with loss, and letting go.

Zombies and witches. Those are the paranormal creatures in this book, I was not aware that is what this book was about, but it makes sense now that I know. Wren is a hardcore witch with spells and growing into her powers etc.. So if you don’t like that kind of thing then this is not the book for you.

This book was ok, I mean its nothing like what I expected so I think that threw me for a loop at the beginning. But while it interested me I was not captivated, I was interested to see how the problem was going to be solved but honestly I would not have cared if I never knew. It was just so-so.

The main problem I had was with Wren. She just annoyed me, I mean I could see why she did it, but I feel like she was very selfish and then after she realized what she had done was wrong she wasn’t really willing to suck it up and fix her mistake. She was just very wishy washy, and primarily only thought of herself.

I loved Gabriel though, he was so sweet and was willing to help Wren even when, in my opinion, she didn’t really deserve it or thank him properly.

Overall I didn’t really like this book, it just wasn’t for me, though if you want a different take on zombies then I would recommend it.
