First & Then blog tour and Giveaway!

Today I have the pleasure of having Emma Mills author of First & Then stop by for the First & Then blog tour which is set up like superlatives. The superlative I got was favorite secondary character! So I asked Emma who some of her favorite secondary characters were and here is what she said!

Sometimes you read a book and the secondary characters are so awesome, you want to read a whole book about them too! To me, secondary characters really serve to cement the world of the protagonist, and to bring more depth or humor or angst or complexity to it.

Some of my very favorite secondary characters in YA are:

- Reagan (Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell) – the best grumpy college roommate you could ask for!

- Wylan (Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo) – beautiful cinnamon roll too good for this world, too pure.

- Tiny Cooper (Will Grayson Will Grayson, David Levithan and John Green) – a secondary character so legendary, he does indeed get his own book!

- Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling) – she is just THE BEST. I would love another seven-part series that just follows Luna’s day-to-day adventures!

I love both Luna and Wylan so I definitly agree with Emma! Some of my favorite secondary charcters include:

George Holly from The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater- He just adds so much to the book.

Cilla from The Royal We By Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan- She is an amazig friend and makes great comments.

Sturmhond from Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo- Just yes. Give him his own book!!!

Skandal Q/A and giveaway with Lindsay Smith

Today I have the pleasure of having Lindsay Smith the author of the Sekret duology stop by to talk about the second book Skandal, which came out on Tuesday!

What is the weirdest thing you have done in the name of research?
My Google search history is probably pretty terrifying! I’ve looked up everything from LSD overdose symptoms to the blood content of the average human body to hyper-obscure Russian manufacturing plants that existed in a strict window of time for research. (Actually, I think my most recent one involved trying to figure out which kinds of cyanide were least likely to result in a successful suicide attempt.) I like to take pictures of unusual buildings, textures, and scenes in nature for future reference—I’m a very visual person, but it helps me evoke the other senses if I can look back on a particular time and place.

What is the thing that made you fascinated with Russia?
I loved poring over my grandparents’ old National Geographics and leather-bound atlases as a kid, and I was fascinated with how the Soviet Union turned into the Russian Federation and an ever-subdividing mix of former republics in such a short period of time. As a young kid, I thought it was so cool that this country that had been something of a forbidden land to my parents’ generation was now wide open, and I wanted to learn all about it. As I got older, I really fell in love with the poetry in the Russian language, and the cycle of tragedy and triumph in Russian history as the major players constantly fought against nature, their enemies, and themselves.

What was the major difference between writing Sekret and writing Skandal?
Sekret required a lot of hard work of the sort I’d never done before, as a debut author—shoring up the worldbuilding of how the psychic abilities worked, quintuple-checking my sources, and honing everything to a sharp edge. Skandal was hard in the way sequels always are (how do I make it bigger and better while also still making it a bit more of the same?). But I’d also gotten a lot of the hard up-front work done—I knew my characters and world and what they could do, so I just had to put them in new and painful situations!

Which one of your characters do you relate with most/ which one do you like writing the most?
I definitely sympathize with Yulia, because I’m pretty stubborn, just like her! ;) Yulia’s father, though, was the most fun to write in Skandal. He was just the right mix of charming and dangerous, sweet and sociopathic, that he was always surprising me. And, of course, I love Valentin for his shy sweetness, intensity, and passion for music.

Thanks so much to Lindsay for taking the time to answer my questions. Here is more about the first book Sekret.

An empty mind is a safe mind.

Yulia knows she must hide her thoughts and control her emotions to survive in Communist Russia. But if she sometimes manipulates the black market traders by reading their thoughts when she touches their skin, so what? Anything to help her survive.

Russia's powerful spy agency, the KGB, is recruiting young people with mind-reading capabilities for their psychic espionage program. Their mission: protect the Soviet space program from American CIA spies. Why shouldn't the KGB use any means necessary to make the young psychic cooperate? Anything to beat the American capitalist scum to the moon.

Yulia is a survivor. She won't be controlled by the KGB, who want to harness her abilities for the State with no regard for her own hopes and dreams. She won't let handsome Sergei plan her life as a member of elite Soviet society, or allow brooding Valentin to consume her with his dangerous mind and even more dangerous ideas. And she certainly won't become the next victim of the powerful American spy who can scrub a brain raw—and seems to be targeting Yulia.

Witherwood Reform School Blog Tour!

Today I have the pleasure of being one of the hosts of the Witherwood Reform School blog tour. I will be reviewing the book and then there is a contest at the end! Also be sure to check out the rest of the book tour, linked below!

Title: Witherwood Reform School

Author: Obert Skye
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co.
Release Date: March 3, 2015
Received From: Publisher for review

Synopsis:  After a slight misunderstanding involving a horrible governess, gravy, and a jar of tadpoles, siblings Tobias and Charlotte Eggars find themselves abandoned by their father at the gates of a creepy reform school. Evil mysteries are afoot at Witherwood, where the grounds are patrolled by vicious creatures and kids are locked in their rooms. Charlotte and Tobias soon realize that they are in terrible danger—especially because the head of Witherwood has perfected the art of mind control. If only their amnesiac father would recover. If only Tobias and Charlotte could solve the dark mystery and free the kids at Witherwood—and ultimately save themselves.

Review:
When I was younger I read the Series of Unfortunate Events books and liked them pretty well. Witherwood Reform School is in that same vein of books.

It is similar to A Series of Unfortunate Events in that there is a narrator who says things that are not exactly hopeful throughout the book. It is also similar in that it is a book about some kids who are in a horrible situation and it never seems to get better.

I liked Witherwood Reform School. It was a fast read, with lots of twists and turns and a scary school that just continues to get creepier and creepier as the book goes on. This book is also good at making you think things might get better and then bam, something else happens.

Tobias and Charlotte are not the smartest kids in the world or else they wouldn't have ended up in the situations they did. But they are resourceful and smart to a point, I also liked their relationship. Also their reactions to things that happened were genuine.

I have always loved books that take place in boarding schools or reform schools because there is so much that can be done to add mystery and intrigue to the story. Witherwood Reform School definitely falls under that category. In fact I wish there had been slightly more information given about certain aspects of what happened, and things that appeared. Though keeping the reader almost as in the dark as the characters adds to the anxious feeling you get when you know something bad is going to happen. Hopefully those things will be addressed in later books because  I would be really interested to know more.

Overall I liked this series and would recommend it to kids/adults who are fans of A Series of Unfortunate Evens or who want a creepy read that will make you stay far away from random mansions.

The Body in the Woods blog tour: Guest Post and Giveaway!

Click to see the other stops on the tour!

Today I have the pleasure of having April Henry author of The Body in the Woods stop by to talk about the most bizarre thing she ever did in the name of research! Don't forget to read down to the end to have a chance to win a copy of The Body in the Woods as well as a whistle!

What’s the most bizarre thing I ever did for research? That’s an easy one. Last year I heard about a class through my kung fu school about how to fight back in close quarters. I signed up. I’ll admit I did not think about who the class was meant to appeal to, ie, not 54-year-old females who are not cops.

The class was held at a martial arts studio where they practice the Russian marital art called Systema. I walked into a huge space, almost like a hangar. Twelve men were already there.

Twelve men in their 30s. Who all turned out to be cops. Cops on SWAT teams at various agencies. (I’m only exaggerating a little. One guy was a retired cop. And there was one young guy who was the son of a cop.) I felt decidedly out of place. In fact, as soon as I opened the door, I wanted to leave.

Then when I saluted onto the training floor the way we do at my kung fu school, I was informed, “This is America! You don’t have to do that!” Then the same guy barked at us that we should begin by doing knuckle push ups.

I have never done knuckle pushups in my life.
I soldiered on.

But things got better after that. The guys were intrigued that I was taking the class for research. They were taking it to save themselves from injury or possibly to save their lives, but they respected that I wanted to get it right.

Since I’m the only woman at my kung fu school who regularly spars, I’ve come to enjoy being the fly on the wall around guys, hearing how they talk among themselves. During the breaks in this class, the guys talked shop, like why you never want to try to shoot through a BMW headrest, as one of them had learned the hard way (the core is made of stainless steel).

I like cops. They remind me of emergency room physicians (I used to work in health care). The emotional distance, the macabre jokes, the high energy, the lack of hesitation. In both types of jobs, you would do nobody any good if you freaked out, shrieking, “Oh my God, what just happened here, somebody just stabbed that lady and there’s blood all over!” No. You need to be able to do what needs to be done, whether it’s subdue the suspect or stop the bleeding.

At the very end of class, you sat in your own car and someone sat behind you. On the seat beside them were a training gun, a training knife, a length of rope, and a plastic bag. They attacked you with these one by one and you had to fight back using what we had just learned. For example, you might be able to hammer their hand against the steering wheel, or slam the seat back into them. If a plastic bag is ever placed over your head, what you do is suck it in, bite it with your front teeth, and stick your tongue out the hole. You still have a plastic bag over your head, but you can breath.

The first time, I panicked when I felt the plastic clinging to my face. I sucked it into my mouth, but then I tried to gnaw it with my molars. Not only did I not succeed, but I started to get pretty low on oxygen, which raised my panic level even further. The second time, though, I remembered my training.

Will I ever write about a character who has a plastic bag put over his or her head? Hell, yes! Plus the principles of Systema are applicable in everyday life (Keep moving, breathe, relax, and maintain your posture.)

Right now I’m considering taking a three-day “Urban Escape and Evasion” course. As part of the course, you are kidnapped, hooded, cuffed and taken somewhere dark and uncomfortable to start your day. You are expected to escape, find your own transportation using “social engineering,” and make your way to a location.. Meanwhile, expert trackers hunt you down, and if they catch you, you have to start again from further away.

The same folks also offer a class called “Surviving Deadly Contact. When I read the description, it talked about how you would learn where the most dangerous spot in the room is and how to handle multiple attackers. I was nodding along, thinking it all sounded interesting, until I came to this: “Open to civilians. You will need an AR type rifle, handgun, and ammo. Camping free.”

I'm pretty game for anything, but I have to admit I am not THAT game.

Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando Giveaway

Everyone has heard about the what can happen when you get your new roommate. Sometimes they are awesome and other times they are your worst nightmare well Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando which came out in late 2013 is a new book that explores that relationship.

The countdown to college has begun.
When Elizabeth receives her freshman-year roommate assignment at the beginning of summer, she shoots off an email to coordinate the basics: TV, microwave, mini-fridge. She can't wait to escape her New Jersey beach town, and her mom, and start life over in California.
The first note to Lauren in San Francisco comes as a surprise; she had requested a single. But if Lauren's learned anything from being the oldest of six, it's that you can't always get what you want, especially when what you want is privacy.
Soon the girls are emailing back and forth, sharing secrets even though they've never met. With family relationships and childhood friendships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives...and each other.
With humor and heart, Sara Zarr, National Book Award finalist for Story of a Girl, and Tara Altebrando, acclaimed author of The Pursuit of Happiness, join forces for a novel about that time after high school, when everything feels like it's ending just as it's beginning.

In honor of Roomies I am going to share my freshman roommate story and courtesy of Hachette I have a chance for you to win a copy of Roomies down below.

My freshman roommate experience was not that bad. I was going to be living on an engineering floor in my dorm so I figured my roommate was going to be a fellow engineer. Luckily I was right and both my roommate and suite mate were both engineers. When I first got my assignment obviously I did not know my roommate and so I reached out so we could decide our room colors etc. It was very pleasant and I was excited to start school.
Neither of us was from Boston so we relied heavily on each other for the first couple of months. We ate dinner together and talked to each other, mostly about our classes. We made a list at the beginning of the semester outlining who would clean the bathroom and when and everyone followed it pretty much to the tee, the only issue was with my suite mate which I will get to in a bit. My roommate joined the dance team and so she was gone a lot which I liked because it meant I got to have the room to myself. Overall after getting used to living with another person it was a good relationship.
Now, to my suite mate. She had her own room attached to ours and she shared a bathroom with us. She had to be reminded more than my roommate to clean it but she did her part. For the most part we all got along and it was good, until the second semester. I don't mean to sound fatalistic it honestly wasn't that bad, but during the second semester my suite mate got a boyfriend at our school. Before that both my roommate and my suite mate had long-distance boyfriends but all that changed. Suddenly we couldn't go take a shower because she was in the shower with her boyfriend, and I who shared a wall with our suite mate was being woken up at dawn to the noise of well... I mean go ahead do that, but don't do it so loud when I am trying to sleep please?
But I cannot complain, I had a pretty good experience compared to lots of people. Both my roommate and my suite mate were nice and we had no big issues.

If you are interested in seeing how Elizabeth and Lauren's roommate situation turns out be sure to check out Roomies. And if you are interested in meeting the authors be sure to see if they are coming to your city!

Blog Tour: Criminal by Terra Elan McVoy

Criminal coverTitle: Criminal
Author: Terra Elan McVoy
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: May 7, 2013
Received: For blog tour in return for honest review

Summary:  Nikki’s life is far from perfect, but at least she has Dee. Her friends tell her that Dee is no good, but Nikki can’t imagine herself without him. He’s hot, he’s dangerous, he has her initials tattooed over his heart, and she loves him more than anything. There’s nothing Nikki wouldn’t do for Dee. Absolutely nothing.

So when Dee pulls Nikki into a crime—a crime that ends in murder—Nikki tells herself that it’s all for true love. Nothing can break them apart. Not the police. Not the arrest that lands Nikki in jail. Not even the investigators who want her to testify against him.

But what if Dee had motives that Nikki knew nothing about? Nikki’s love for Dee is supposed to be unconditional…but even true love has a limit. And Nikki just might have reached hers.

Review:  I had read Pure by Terra Elan McVoy and really liked it so I was excited to read Criminal even though I knew it was going to be completely different. I don't normally read books like this, not because I don't like them I just don't find myself drawn to them. But something made me want to pick Criminal up and I am so glad I did.

Criminal is really intense as you can probably tell from the summary, but let me tell you I was unprepared for the emotional roller coaster that Terra Elan McVoy put me through. I alternated from wanting to shake Nikki and give her a hug.

Nikki was the type of character you would expect, needy and naive. But the reasons McVoy gave for her being like that made a lot of sense.

This was a very character driven book and the interactions between Nikki and Dee and Nikki and Bird seemed so realistic it hurt me to think of anyone being in that type of situation.

Overall Criminal is a heartbreaking, character driven novel that will have you flipping the pages to find out what happens.
If you've read Criminal what did you think? Leave a comment and let me know!

Nobody by Jennifer Lynn Barnes Review + Giveaway

Title: Nobody
Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Release Date: January 22, 2013
Received: For review

Summary:  There are people in this world who are Nobody. No one sees them. No one notices them. They live their lives under the radar, forgotten as soon as you turn away.

That’s why they make the perfect assassins.

The Institute finds these people when they’re young and takes them away for training. But an untrained Nobody is a threat to their organization. And threats must be eliminated.

Sixteen-year-old Claire has been invisible her whole life, missed by the Institute’s monitoring. But now they’ve ID’ed her and send seventeen-year-old Nix to remove her. Yet the moment he lays eyes on her, he can’t make the hit. It’s as if Claire and Nix are the only people in the world for each other. And they are—because no one else ever notices them.

Review:  We all feel like nobody every once in a while, but what if you found out you actually were Nobody? That is what Claire must come to terms with in Nobody.

Claire and Nix are two great main characters. They, as we learn throughout the book, are Nobodies, people who no one really notices. But while Nix has grown up knowing he is a Nobody, Claire is just learning it. I enjoyed Claire's journey into realizing what she is, Nix is so sure of what he thinks and when Claire's existence tears that all apart their resulting journey is both complex and interesting.

I like books that are semi-grounded in reality but have a cool scientific twist ad Nobody definitely has that. I loved learning about the Institute, the Nobodies, and the Nulls. Barnes has painted a picture so real that I was getting shivers thinking about the possibility of Nulls existing and about real people who are basically the real life equivalent of Nulls.

The way the book is written is kind of strange. Instead of alternating between characters each chapter. The chapters are broken up and they go back and forth between Claire and Nix. After a little while I got used to it but it is different when you first pick it up.

Overall I liked Nobody and am looking forward to the next one.

Promised by Caragh M. O'Brien review + giveaway!

Title: Promised (Birthmarked #3)
Author: Caragh M. O'Brien
Publisher: Roaring Brook Press (Macmillan)
Release Date: October 2, 2012
Received: For review as part of the Promised blog tour

Summary:  After defying the ruthless Enclave, surviving the wasteland, and upending the rigid matriarchy of Sylum, Gaia Stone now faces her biggest challenge ever.  She must lead the people of Sylum back to the Enclave and persuade the Protectorat to grant them refuge from the wasteland.  In Gaia's absence, the Enclave has grown more cruel, more desperate to experiment on mothers from outside the wall, and now the stakes of cooperating or rebelling have never been higher.  Is Gaia ready, as a leader, to sacrifice what--or whom--she loves most?

Review:  I loved Birthmarked. It  was an amazing distopian novel with a girl who is a midwife as the main character, not really something you see everyday. Then I read Prized which I also liked but not nearly as much as Birthmarked so when I picked up Promised I was really excited to see where Gaia's story would lead and was hoping it would be just as good as Birthmarked.

While it wasn't as amazing as Birthmarked Promised was still very good! I loved the attempted blending of the two societies and the very difficult choices that Gaia had to make. And those were some tough choices that I don't think I could make!

Another thing I really enjoyed was seeing where some of the characters that we saw in Birthmarked were now, and it was not what I was expecting. The Enclave continued to surprise me with its brutality even up to the last pages. I applaud Caragh for coming up with such different but ruthless societies that are just trying to do what they think is right.

So if you want a distopian series that makes you think about what is right and what is wrong then I encourage you to pick up he Birthmarked trilogy. Or if you just want a distopian with a kick-ass heroine these books will work for you as well!

Be sure to check out my review of Birthmarked as well as Caragh M. O'Brien's guest post

As part of the Promised blog tour I have the opportunity to giveaway a set of the Birthmarked trilogy! Fill out the form below to be entered!

The Childe by C.A. Kunz review + giveaway!

Title: The Childe
Author: C.A. Kunz

Publisher: Self
Release Date: February 18, 2011
Received: From publicist for blog tour

Summary:
Cat Colvin
Average Teenager?
Or Something Else Entirely?

Cat Colvin is pretty much your typical run-of-the-mill teenager. Sure, she’s taller than most girls, has a mane of fiery red hair that’s impossible to tame, is left-handed, and her eyes are two different colors, but that’s where the differences end... unless you include the minor detail of her slow transformation into a Childe.

High school can definitely be challenging, and for Cat it’s no different. This is especially true when she’s faced with the daunting task of trying to hide her budding Childe traits as they begin to reveal themselves at the most inopportune times. To make matters worse, her family is oddly dead set against Ryan, the boy she grows to like. But everyone has their secrets: is Ryan really what he seems to be, and what is Cat’s family not telling her?

The Childe is the first book in this coming-of-age fantasy series which follows Cat's life through the twists and turns toward finding out whom and what she really is. Come and take the plunge with Cat into a world filled with mystery, biting humor, and the paranormal.

Review:  I don't typically review self published books but I do make exceptions if it is from an author I have worked with before or through a publicist I have worked with before. Because of this I was really excited to find that The Childe is an example of a well done self published book.

I enjoyed getting to know Cat. She is a regular 15 year old with a penchant for horror novels, and I felt that she was very realistic and besides the whole Childe thing I felt like I could have gone down to the local high school and met someone similar to her.

I also really liked Cat's group of friends they were all so different and really added a nice dynamic to the story. I also liked the fact that Cat's parents were involved, I mean they had some idea what was going on ( more than Cat) but I liked how they worried and acted how any other parents were, not all AWOL like other YA parents.

As for the plot it was very interesting, I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen next. My criticism would be the fact that I would get a little snippet of info that would just make me even more confused and lost. I wish in that respect the introduction to information had been a little bit smoother because I found myself lost for some of the book. Thankfully some of my questions were answered by the end and I could see what the author was trying to accomplish. But other than that I was very happy with this book.

This is a good paranormal read that is new, fresh and interesting!

KATE WINTERS HAS WON IMMORTALITY.

BUT IF SHE WANTS A LIFE WITH HENRY IN THE UNDERWORLD, SHE'LL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT.

Becoming immortal wasn't supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she's as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he's becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate's coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry's first wife, Persephone.

Review:
I really enjoyed The Goddess Test. So I was super excited to read Goddess Interrupted, and I have to say it did not disappoint! In fact I even think that I might have liked Goddess Interrupted even more than The Goddess Test, which is a huge deal.

So obviously Aimee Carter does not fall to the dreaded lame second book curse. Though one of the problems I had with the first book was still annoying in Goddess Interrupted. I still wish we had gotten to know Henry more. I know that we learned a little but since he was mostly gone in this book we still don't know him very well. But there is an excerpt at the end from Henry's point of view which gave me a better understanding of who he is.

In Goddess Interrupted we got to meet Persephone, as well as getting to explore the Underworld. I loved learning more about the Underworld and how it worked and I hope we can get even more f that in the next book. Persephone while starting out annoying and vapid, became a sympathetic character and I really like how Aimee Carter was able to do that.

I think Kate starting coming into her own and finding out her place in the Underworld. And then she was slammed with conflict. I was genuinely surprised by the twist at the end and I cannot wait for the next book.

I could not put Goddess Interrupted down. I had to know what was going to happen. I think ti would be a great summer read because its not too long but its full of tension. I definitely recommend that you run and pick this up!

I also have a copy of Goddess Interrupted up for grabs!
